Flea infestations
Flea infestations can happen quickly and through no fault of your own. Pets can get fleas from other animals and even places they may visit and carry them home before you even see the signs. Flea pupae can also lay dormant in flooring, skirting boards and even furniture before becoming active once you’ve moved in or brought second hand furniture home. If you think you have a flea infestation, make sure you get rid of them quickly before the infestation gets too large.

What are the different species of Fleas commonly found as a pest in the UK?
Cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis)
The cat flea is wingless and approximately 3mm long with long legs enabling them to jump. Cat fleas can only determine whether the host is suitable once it has bitten, if it is unsuitable it will soon drop off. Fleas go through 4 stages of eggs, larvae, pupae and adults. Their eggs are small and white. The full 4 stages can be completed from 2 weeks or take up to 8 months. The adult cat flea will awake when it senses vibration from pets or humans, heat, noise or carbon dioxide from potential blood meals. In order to complete a cat fleas’ life cycle it can not only feed on human blood.
Dog flea (Ctenocephalides canis)
The dog flea is between 1-4mm long and black in colour although after consuming a blood meal may have a reddish appearance. Adult dog fleas feed on the blood of dogs and cats and will bite humans too. Dog fleas are transmitters of dog tapeworms which also affect humans. The flea goes through a 4 stage cycle of eggs, larvae, pupae, adult. The process can take anywhere from 2 weeks to several months depending on conditions. Adult dog fleas can live up to a year in an ideal habitat but only 1-2 weeks if no host is present.
Bird Flea (Ceratophyllus gallinea)
The bird flea is between 1-8mm long and is a light brown colour. The bird flea has a short lifespan but can breed in massive numbers. Their habitat is mainly bird nests in dry situations such as loft spaces and breeding is limited to birds breeding seasons leaving the nest when the fledglings leave. Bird fleas will bite other animals and humans too.
Human flea (Pulex irritans)
The human flea is 1-4mm in length and is black or brown in appearance with no wings. They are now less common in the UK apart from in agricultural areas where they can survive on pigs and jump to humans. They can survive by breeding on pigs, hedgehogs, foxes and badgers and if found in homes it will usually be in bedrooms. The adult human flea can live from 2 weeks to a year depending on the habitat and will wait several months for a host to feed from.
