Main species of cockroaches in the UK
There are over 3000 known species of cockroach in the world the main 4 species commonly found in the uk are:
German cockroach (Blattella germanica)
The adults are 10-15mm long and they are a brown-yellowish colour with two longitude marks on the pronotum, both males and females have well developed wings and they can easily climb rough or polished surfaces.
Oriental cockroach (Blatta orientalis)
The adults are 20-25mm long and are dark brown almost black, the male’s wings cover two thirds of the abdomen whereas they females are almost unnoticeable. The oriental cockroach can climb rough but not smooth surfaces.
American cockroach (Periplaneta Americana)
The adults are 30-50 mm long and are more or a red brown colour with a yellow border around the pronotum, the last segment of cerci is twice as long as it is wide.
Brown Banded cockroach (Supella longipalpa)
The adults are 1-15 mm long and have yellow brown stripes across their abdomen, these are much easier to see on nymphs as their lack of wings does not obscure them.
